ABOUT THERAPY:

I utilize an array of therapeutic techniques. The primary forms of therapy that I use include play therapy, sand tray therapy, filial therapy, and a humanistic person centered talk therapy approach.

Play Therapy:  Play therapy is one of the most effective forms of therapy for children bigstock-Two-Little-Girl-Playing-With-B-42710005today. This is because children encounter their world at an experiential rather than cognitive level.  In a therapeutic environment play is the medium of expressing their experiences as well as their feelings about themselves. In addition, this is the optimum way to connect with and help children because play is their language and thus their best form of communication.

Filial Therapy:  Filial therapy is a form of play therapy involving the child with his or her parent in the play therapy room.  The parent is coached throughout the session on the specific technique and how to interact with the child to improve parent-child relational problems.

Sand Tray Therapy:  Sand tray therapy is great for adolescents, adults, and couples. It acts as a canvas for one’s thoughts and feelings.  When working with children, sand tray therapy can be modified for use as another play therapy tool.

Creative & Artistic Therapy:  Art is another medium for people of all ages to express their thoughts and feelings. Art is often very useful with helping children to overcome an emotional barrier.

Mindfulness:  I have recently co-facilitated mindfulness lessons in school based classrooms. It is useful in helping children become aware of themselves in the moment, as well as cultivating many relevant coping strategies. It is a great grounding tool to help re-center the child.
